Today is Day 16 of the Iran ceasefire deal. The gas price floor that ONYX projected on August 7 — ‘projected floor August 25-28, revised August 16 to August 20-22’ — has arrived. Gas prices are at approximately $0.28-0.32 below Hormuz-closure peak, consistent with ONYX’s total reduction projection of $0.28-0.35. This is the deal’s most direct and measurable consumer benefit, arriving 12 days before Labor Day.

THE FLOOR — WHAT IT MEANS POLITICALLY
Gas prices have reached their floor approximately at the August 20-22 revised projection, 3-5 days ahead of the original August 25-28 projection. The floor arrived with 12 days remaining before Labor Day — the peak political visibility window. Every day between the floor and Labor Day is a day that American consumers are filling their tanks at prices meaningfully below the Hormuz-closure peak. The political benefit of the ceasefire deal is now in the consumer experience.
The 3% oil price spike from Trump’s August 20 ‘economic warfare’ announcement partially reversed the deal discount; gas prices absorbed some of that but the overall floor remains approximately $0.28-0.32 below peak. The spike did not eliminate the consumer benefit; it reduced it by approximately 10-15% of the total projected reduction.
THE NUMBERS
ONYX’s tracked trajectory on gas prices:
▸ August 7 (Day 1): ceasefire signed; Brent crude falls $4-5 overnight; original floor projection August 25-28
▸ August 12 (Day 5): gas prices down $0.08 at pump; ahead of projection
▸ August 16 (Day 9): gas prices down $0.15-0.20; floor projection revised to August 20-22
▸ August 20 (Day 13): 3% oil price spike from ‘economic warfare’ announcement; floor arrival delayed slightly
▸ August 22-23 (Day 15-16): floor at approximately $0.28-0.32 below Hormuz-closure peak; 12 days before Labor Day
▸ Original projection: $0.28-0.35 total reduction; actual: $0.28-0.32 (oil spike reduced the upper end)
THE LABOR DAY WINDOW
Labor Day (September 1) is the single highest-visibility moment for gas prices in the American consumer calendar. It combines: the last major summer travel weekend, when millions of Americans fill their tanks; media coverage of gas prices as a Labor Day story; and political campaigns’ peak attention to economic messaging. The ceasefire deal’s gas price benefit arriving 12 days before Labor Day means it will be fully established in consumers’ experience by the time the political visibility peaks.
WHAT THE FLOOR DOESN’T RESOLVE
The floor is the gas price story’s good news. The remaining deal uncertainties:
▸ The 3% economic warfare oil price spike has not fully reversed; there is upward pressure on the floor
▸ The second nuclear session’s content will be priced by oil markets immediately; if Session 2 content disappoints, oil prices will rise and gas prices will follow
▸ October 6 (Day 60) is 43 days away; if the deal expires without an extension, gas prices will spike back toward pre-deal levels
▸ Any Hormuz incident — the Gulf proxy failure mode remains elevated — would immediately send oil prices higher
DAY 16 DEAL STATUS
▸ Hormuz vessel count: approximately 70-80/day; normalization trajectory intact
▸ IAEA monitoring: active; enrichment below 20% through Day 15
▸ Gas prices: floor reached at approximately $0.28-0.32 below peak
▸ Second nuclear session: scheduled (August 22 confirmation); specific date pending
▸ Ben Gvir: zero enrichment demand public (August 22); coalition ultimatum not yet formal
▸ Days to October 6: 43
| CONFIDENCE: HIGH | Gas price floor approximately $0.28-0.32 below Hormuz-closure peak is from AAA/GasBuddy tracking consistent with ONYX August 7-23 projection. Original floor projection (August 25-28, revised August 20-22) is from ONYX established documentation. All Day 16 indicators are from ONYX cumulative tracking. |
| ⚖️ BIAS CHECK — WHO IS SAYING WHAT | |
| Trump Administration | Will heavily promote the gas price floor before Labor Day; the political benefit is real |
| Democrats | Will note the five months of elevated prices before the deal while acknowledging the current decline |
| Consumers | Are experiencing the lower prices regardless of the political debate; the consumer benefit is real |
| Oil Markets | Holding the deal discount at the floor level; Session 2 content and October 6 proximity will determine whether the floor holds |
