More Than 270 Journalists Have Been Killed in Gaza Since October 2023. That Number Needs to Be Stated.

The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate reports that more than 270 journalists have been killed in Gaza since October 7, 2023 — approximately 22 months. The organization also describes espionage, sabotage, and covert operations as a “constant reality” for reporters working in Gaza. This death toll, if accurate, would make this conflict the deadliest for journalists in at least the modern recorded history of press freedom monitoring. It deserves to be named.

Demonstrators carry hand-painted memorial portraits of Palestinian journalists Anas Al-Sharif, Khaled El-Shawa, and Saleh Al-Jafarawi along the Paseo del Prado, near the Royal Botanical Garden, in Madrid on May 17th, 2026, during a march marking the 78th anniversary of the Nakba, the mass displacement of Palestinians that accompanied the founding of the State of Israel in 1948. All three journalists were killed while reporting from inside Gaza during the conflict. The portraits, depicting them in their press vests, pay tribute to Gaza’s frontline reporters amid what press freedom organizations have described as one of the deadliest conflicts for journalists in modern history. Around 1,300 people took to the streets, according to figures provided by Spain’s Government Delegation, marching from Atocha to Callao under the slogan “No Nakba, No Genocidios, No Guerra, No Mordazas” (No Nakba, No Genocides, No War, No Gag Laws).

WHAT 270 JOURNALISTS KILLED MEANS

For context: the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) tracks journalist deaths globally. In all of 2022, CPJ recorded 67 journalist deaths globally. In all of 2021, 24. The Gaza conflict’s toll of 270+ over 22 months — if confirmed by independent verification — would exceed the annual global total by a factor of several for each of those years.

The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate is a primary source with direct access to its membership. Independent verification has been extremely difficult because of the access constraints described below. CPJ and Reporters Without Borders (RSF) have independently documented over 100 journalist deaths in Gaza — a number that already exceeded any comparable conflict in their modern records. The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate’s higher figure of 270+ likely includes those killed in ways not independently verified by international organizations with restricted access.

THE ACCESS CONSTRAINT — WHY INDEPENDENT VERIFICATION IS DIFFICULT

Independent journalism in Gaza operates under conditions that make systematic verification extremely difficult:

▸  International journalists have been largely prevented from entering Gaza except through specific IDF-managed access arrangements

▸  Palestinian journalists operating in Gaza face the specific dangers that produced the death toll being reported

▸  Communication infrastructure has been repeatedly disrupted, making real-time verification impossible

▸  The IDF maintains its position that journalists killed in Gaza were either in proximity to military targets or were themselves combatants — a claim contested by journalism freedom organizations

The verification gap is real and should be noted. It does not reduce the weight of the documented deaths; it reflects the access conditions that make independent verification of all 270+ deaths impossible using standard journalism verification methodology.

THE ESPIONAGE AND SABOTAGE DIMENSION

The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate’s description of espionage, sabotage, and covert operations as a “constant reality” for Gaza reporters goes beyond describing physical danger. It alleges that journalists covering Gaza are being actively targeted for intelligence operations — presumably by Israeli intelligence services — in ways that compromise their safety and their sources. If accurate, this describes a systematic effort to suppress journalism about Gaza that extends beyond the battlefield conditions that produce journalist deaths.

WHY THIS MATTERS FOR ACCOUNTABILITY

The documentary record of what has happened in Gaza since October 2023 depends on journalists. If those journalists are being killed at a rate unprecedented in modern conflict and if the surviving journalists are operating under espionage and sabotage conditions, the documentary record is incomplete by design. Future accountability proceedings — ICC investigations, historical documentation, truth and reconciliation processes — will work with an information environment that was shaped by the deaths of the people whose job was to create that record.

CONFIDENCE:
MODERATE
Palestinian Journalists Syndicate figure (270+) is from Al Jazeera reporting their release. CPJ and RSF independently documented figures (100+) are from those organizations’ published reports. The access constraint description is from established reporting on Gaza access conditions. The espionage and sabotage claim is from the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate — it is a serious allegation that ONYX reports with appropriate sourcing caution.
⚖️  BIAS CHECK — WHO IS SAYING WHAT
Palestinian Journalists SyndicatePrimary source with direct membership access; limited independent verification possible given access constraints
CPJ and RSFIndependent organizations with rigorous verification standards; their 100+ figure is more conservatively verified but is itself unprecedented
IDFDisputes journalist classification in many deaths; has not fully responded to the death toll as a category; maintains journalists killed were near military targets or combatants
International Press Freedom CommunityTreats Gaza as the most dangerous conflict for journalists in modern recorded history; 270 or 100+ — either figure is catastrophic
Al JazeeraCovering as an accountability story; Al Jazeera has lost multiple journalists in Gaza specifically

QUESTIONS YOU MAY STILL HAVE

Q: Why is the 270 figure so much higher than CPJ’s count?

A: Independent international organizations like CPJ use rigorous verification requirements — they confirm each death through multiple independent sources. In Gaza, where access is restricted and communication is disrupted, many deaths cannot be independently verified by this standard. The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate has direct membership access and can document deaths that international organizations cannot independently confirm.

Q: Has any country taken formal action over journalist deaths in Gaza?

A: The ICC has been investigating the Gaza conflict since 2021 and has jurisdiction over crimes against press freedom under international humanitarian law. The ICC prosecutor’s office has noted journalist protection violations in its public statements about the investigation.
