Harald met Sonja Haraldsen in 1959, when he was 22 and she was 22. She was the daughter of a clothing merchant — a middle-class Norwegian woman with no royal or aristocratic connection. Harald decided he wanted to marry her. His father, King Olav V, and the Norwegian government’s constitutional gatekeepers resisted: a royal marriage to a commoner was unprecedented in modern Norwegian history and required parliamentary approval.

Harald waited. He publicly refused to marry anyone else. He made clear he would remain unmarried rather than marry a woman he didn’t choose. After nine years — in 1968 — the Norwegian Parliament voted to approve the marriage. Harald and Sonja were married on August 29, 1968. He was 31.

WHY IT WAS A MODERNIZING BREAK  

European royal marriages in the 20th century were still largely dynastic arrangements: eligible partners were drawn from a pool of royal and aristocratic families across the continent, with commoners essentially excluded. Harald’s insistence on marrying Sonja, and the Norwegian Parliament’s eventual approval, shifted the Norwegian monarchy’s relationship with its public. A king who chose his own wife based on personal love rather than dynastic calculation was a different kind of king than his predecessors.

He could have married a princess. He waited nine years instead. The Norwegian Parliament finally said yes. He was 31 on their wedding day.

A NOTE ON THE DATE  

Harald and Sonja were married on August 29, 1968. Today, August 29, 2026, is the 58th anniversary of their wedding day — and the day Harald died. He died on their anniversary.
