Four Nepali Hydropower Plants Just Went Dark. Here’s the Electricity Crisis Hiding Inside the Disaster.

The Nepal-China glacier disaster has produced a secondary infrastructure crisis alongside its human toll: four hydropower plants supplying at least 211 megawatts to Nepal’s national power grid have been damaged and taken offline. Nepal’s national power grid has a total installed capacity of approximately 2,800 megawatts; losing 211 megawatts represents approximately 7.5% of national installed capacity at a time when the disaster response itself requires maximum power infrastructure.

WHY HYDROPOWER VULNERABILITY MATTERS  

Nepal’s electricity system is heavily dependent on hydropower: approximately 98% of Nepal’s electricity generation is hydropower.
