Amazon’s Ring is rolling out new encryption technology designed to address longstanding surveillance and privacy fears associated with its home security cameras, according to CNN. The timing — the week of the DHS Minnesota surveillance revelation (ONYX August 26) and the broader national surveillance conversation — makes the announcement editorially significant beyond its consumer technology dimension.

THE RING PRIVACY PROBLEM HISTORY
Ring cameras have been associated with specific documented privacy concerns:

However, encryption does not fully resolve the law enforcement data sharing concern: if law enforcement makes a legal request for footage under a valid warrant, encryption does not prevent disclosure — the account holder can be compelled to provide access or the company can decrypt under legal process.
Encryption stops hackers. It doesn’t stop warrants. Ring’s new encryption is a real privacy improvement for some of the documented concerns. It is not a complete privacy solution for all of them.
