A meeting between President Trump and Democratic leaders Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries, originally set for today, was canceled by Trump earlier this week. In a Truth Social post, Trump said that after “reviewing the details of the unserious and ridiculous demands” from Democrats, he had “decided that no meeting with their Congressional Leaders could possibly be productive.”
The sticking point is specific: Democrats’ counterproposal would extend government funding while also addressing expiring Affordable Care Act tax credits and adding funds for member security. The House already passed a short-term Republican funding bill along mostly party lines; that measure and a Democratic alternative both failed in the Senate, which requires 60 votes to advance either. Schumer responded to the cancellation directly: “Trump is running away from the negotiating table before he even gets there… Trump and Republicans are holding America hostage. Donald Trump will own the shutdown.”
House members are expected to be in recess until after October 1; the Senate is scheduled to return September 29, one day before the funding deadline, for what would be last-minute negotiation at best.
