Germany’s AfD Can’t Govern Despite Winning. Italy’s Right Did. Here’s the European Pattern and What It Means.

Far-right parties have achieved electoral strength across Europe in 2026:

▸  France: Marine Le Pen’s RN first in multiple first-round elections; blocked from governing by left-right alliances

▸  Sweden: SD second-largest party; providing parliamentary support to a center-right government without formal coalition membership

▸  Netherlands: Geert Wilders’ PVV leading governing coalition — the Northern European firewall breaking

▸  Germany: AfD first in Saxony-Anhalt; firewall holding

▸  Italy: Giorgia Meloni’s FdI leading a full governing coalition since 2022 — the definitive firewall break

THE ITALIAN PRECEDENT

Italy’s Brothers of Italy — a party with roots in post-war Italian neo-fascism, though significantly repositioned since then — has governed Italy as the lead coalition partner since October 2022. Prime Minister Meloni has governed within EU and NATO frameworks, maintained Italy’s commitments to Ukraine, and has not implemented the most extreme positions her party’s history suggested she might. The Italian precedent is used by advocates of breaking the firewall elsewhere to argue that far-right parties in government moderate when they govern.

THE COUNTER-ARGUMENT

The case against the Italian precedent applying elsewhere: Italy’s FdI had already substantially repositioned before Meloni’s government; the AfD’s specific positions — on the Verfassungsschutz watchlist, with active surveillance of some chapters — represent a different point on the spectrum. Whether Germany’s AfD would govern like Italy’s FdI or produce a genuinely threatening situation for German democracy is the specific unknown that the firewall is designed to avoid testing.

Italy broke the firewall in 2022. Meloni’s government has governed within EU and NATO frameworks. AfD advocates point to Italy. AfD critics point to the Verfassungsschutz. The specific difference between Italian FdI and German AfD is the specific question the firewall is designed to not find out the answer to.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

▸  Germany federal elections — whether the Saxony-Anhalt result signals a federal-level AfD trajectory

▸  Netherlands experiment — whether Wilders’ coalition survives as a data point on firewall-breaking outcomes

▸  EU cohesion — whether far-right governments in multiple member states affect EU policy coherence
