ONYX covered Netanyahu’s criminal prosecution context at the coalition collapse (August 27): three cases (1000, 2000, 4000); prosecutions proceeding with partial effect of PM status; transition to caretaker status expected to accelerate timelines. Today: trial proceedings have resumed.

THE THREE CASES
Benjamin Netanyahu faces criminal charges in three cases:
▸ Case 1000 (Gifts from businessmen): Netanyahu and his wife Sara are accused of receiving gifts worth approximately 700,000 shekels from wealthy businessmen in exchange for political favors; the gifts included cigars, champagne, and jewelry
▸ Case 2000 (Newspaper deal): Netanyahu allegedly negotiated a deal with Yedioth Ahronoth publisher Arnon Mozes for favorable media coverage in exchange for regulatory moves that would harm competitor Israel Hayom
▸ Case 4000 (Bezeq-Walla): the most serious case; Netanyahu allegedly granted regulatory benefits worth billions of shekels to Bezeq telecom in exchange for favorable coverage on the Walla news website; he is charged with bribery, fraud, and breach of trust
HOW CARETAKER STATUS CHANGES THE LEGAL PICTURE
Israeli law does not grant the prime minister formal immunity from criminal prosecution; what PM status provides is primarily practical: a sitting PM has access to classified material and arguments about national security that can complicate prosecution, and political pressure to slow-walk proceedings to avoid destabilizing the government. A caretaker PM’s political protection is significantly reduced:
▸ No majority government to protect: Netanyahu cannot use coalition arithmetic to shield himself through parliamentary procedures that would slow prosecution
▸ Limited classified material arguments: a caretaker government is managing ongoing commitments, not making major new policy decisions; the classified material justifications for delay are weaker
▸ Electoral incentive to move quickly: the prosecution has an incentive to move the case forward before November elections might produce a new government with different prosecutorial priorities
CASE 4000’S SPECIFIC GRAVITY
Case 4000 is the most legally significant of the three. Bribery is a more serious charge than fraud and breach of trust; the alleged regulatory benefits to Bezeq were valued at billions of shekels; and the Walla news website’s coverage was central to the prosecution’s theory that Netanyahu traded policy for favorable media. A conviction on Case 4000’s bribery charges would carry the most severe sentence of the three cases.
Netanyahu is managing Gaza Phase 1 hostage releases as caretaker PM while his criminal trial has resumed. The deal he accepted to save the hostages ended the coalition that was his political protection. The trial is the specific consequence.
THE ELECTION TIMING
Israeli elections are scheduled for approximately late November 2026. If the trial proceeds quickly, it could produce significant courtroom developments — testimony, documentary evidence, judicial rulings on admissibility — during the active election campaign. Whether this helps or hurts Netanyahu electorally depends on whether Israeli voters view the proceedings as legitimate accountability or political persecution: a division that Netanyahu has been cultivating since the charges were first filed.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT
▸ Trial schedule — the specific hearing dates and witness schedule for the resumed proceedings
▸ Case 4000 developments — the most legally significant case moving forward
▸ Netanyahu defense — whether his defense strategy changes given caretaker status
▸ November elections — whether trial proceedings affect electoral campaign dynamics
| CONFIDENCE: HIGH | Netanyahu criminal trial resumes, three cases (1000, 2000, 4000) and charge summaries, caretaker status legal dimension from confirmed reporting and ONYX August 27 documentation. |
| ⚖️ BIAS CHECK — WHO IS SAYING WHAT | |
| Israeli prosecution | Has an institutional interest in moving the case forward; caretaker status reduces the delays that PM status enabled |
| Netanyahu defense | Will argue political persecution and national security dimensions; the caretaker status removes some but not all of those arguments |
| Israeli public | Is divided on whether the prosecution is legitimate accountability or opposition-driven political warfare; the election will be a partial referendum on that division |
| Ben Gvir / opposition | Has every political incentive to emphasize the trial’s progression; it reinforces the ‘Netanyahu folded and now faces justice’ campaign narrative |
