Taiwan’s National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology (NCSIST) demonstrated three armed and reconnaissance-capable quadruped robots on Tuesday, officials and institute materials show, presenting systems intended for patrol and force-protection roles on Taiwan’s outlying island garrisons amid rising maritime tensions with China.
NCSIST showcased the robots at a Taipei media event, saying the machines are built on the Vision 60 quadruped platform supplied by U.S.-based Ghost Robotics and fitted with domestically developed sensor and weapons modules. The institute said the variants include a LiDAR-and-thermal-imaging model for patrol, an electro-optical reconnaissance version that can identify and track targets while sending data to a command-and-control node, and a version equipped with a remotely controlled weapon station for strike as well as reconnaissance tasks.
According to NCSIST statements distributed at the event, each robot weighs about 52.4 kilograms, can carry up to 10 kilograms of payload, has a top speed of roughly 2.5 meters per second, and can operate for eight to 10 hours in temperatures ranging from −40°C to 55°C. NCSIST also said the platforms can network with one another and integrate with unmanned ground vehicles and aerial drones to form a coordinated “three-dimensional battlefield network.”
Why Taiwan is developing them
NCSIST officials told reporters that Taiwan’s military has expressed interest in such systems for reducing personnel exposure on remote island garrisons — sites that defense analysts often identify as vulnerabilities in any cross-strait contingency. Jen Kuo-kuang, head of NCSIST’s Missile and Rocket Systems Research Division, said marines and coast guard units see a need for persistent patrol capabilities on features including the Nansha (Spratly), Dongsha (Pratas) and other outlying islands, although he added the military has not issued a formal procurement order.
